澳洲7日舉辦聯邦大選，在野自由國家黨聯盟取得壓倒勝利，艾伯特將成為澳洲第28任總理，澳洲總理陸克文晚間發表敗選聲明，並致電祝賀艾伯特，同時宣佈辭去工黨黨魁。
據報導，陸克文聲明中說：「我知道，全國工黨黨員今晚的心情沈重，身為各位的領袖，我要承擔這個責任」，他接著表示：「是時候讓全國團結一致，因為無論我們持甚麼政見，最重要是我們都是澳洲人。能將我們團結起來的力量，遠較分隔我們的強大，澳洲能夠和平轉移政權，足以證明澳洲是個偉大的國家」。
陸克文發表敗選聲明後不久，艾伯特隨即在雪梨宣布勝選，承諾將為人民帶來一個「具競爭力、具誠信」的政府。艾伯特說，他期待組一個有能力且值得信賴的新政府，承諾未來3年將廢除碳稅、遏止難民抵澳、預算重回盈餘，澳洲將更開放經商。
工黨在澳洲執政6年，但因黨魁頻頻更替造成民眾不安，加上經濟前景不明，澳洲民眾用選票，讓工黨黯然下台。澳洲是少數強制投票的國家，選民不投票的話將挨罰，根據澳洲選舉委員會（AEC）的開票結果顯示，開票作業已逾九成，自由黨/國家黨聯盟目前贏得90席，工黨則是55席。
