台灣4G執照才剛發放，政府與產業界已經開始著手進行5G技術研發。行政院科技會報辦公室舉行5G發展產業策略會議（SRB），行政院政務委員張善政指出，5G是台灣資通訊產業未來最重要發展、轉型項目，期待能與產學合作，為台灣找出有效的5G發展方向。

行政院科技會報辦公室執行祕書吳明機指出，過去台灣的資通訊產業發展是一種地圖式發展，也就是大廠訂了方向，台灣作為後進者，只能跟進，現在是希望做航圖式研發，也就是知道目標，但航線與方向、障礙或協助，要業者自己摸索與決定，台灣業者的心態都必須調整。
