因為主語補語可以是名詞或形容詞. 然而主詞補語是一種功能, 名詞或形容詞只是一個詞或字(word) 如果沒有用在句子用, 它是不具有任何功能 (function)的, 例如:

student 和 body 是兩個名詞, 當它們被組合為 "student body", "student" 成為形容詞.
young 是個形容詞, 當它被使用為 "the young", "young" 成為名詞.
