今年季後，美國大聯盟最火紅的自由球員James Shields，據報導，他將尋求一紙5年1億1000萬美元的合約，巨人、紅襪都有興趣，洋基也可能參與競爭。

紅襪隊已經交易來Rick Porcello、Wade Miley兩名先發投手，也簽下了Justin Masterson，如果再簽James Shields明年球季的先發投手戰力將相當堅強。

James Shields的選秀順位不高，2006年效力光芒隊時升上大聯盟，2007年開始連8年投球局數超過200局，勝投數超過兩位數，2013年轉隊到皇家，今年戰績14勝8敗、防禦率3.21，三振180次，投227局，是皇家睽違29年打進世界大賽的大功臣。
