這句其實是分成三段理解：

Chris Kyle was killed that day

克里斯凱爾當天被殺

by a veteran
被一個退伍軍人

(that/who/whom) he was trying to help.
他想幫忙的(那個)。

以文法來說，最後那部分是省略関係代名詞，整句中文意思就是「Chris Kyle 當天就被他想幫忙的ㄧ個退伍軍人殺了。」
