川斯楚馬一九三一年在斯德哥爾摩出生，他在斯德哥爾摩大學讀文學史、詩論、宗教學和心理學；其後一半時間當心理醫師，一半時間寫詩。他寫了十五本詩集，被翻譯成英文等六十種語言，是瑞典家喻戶曉的詩人。川斯楚馬被譽為神秘主義大師，呈現像夢般的意識，時間極為緩慢，讓內在自我與四周的世界分離。他的詩富於想像和情感，但常有出人意外的神來之筆，讀來令人耳目一新。川斯楚馬一九九○年中風，半身不遂不能說話，但仍繼續寫作，二○○四年以瑞典文出版詩集「大謎團」（The Great Enigma），兩年後以英文出版。
