LG showing optimism for OLED TVs

LG Electronics is continuing to push OLED TV panel development despite high costs for the technology and competitive LCD technology that is becoming thinner in size and higher in resolution, according to market observers.
Many vendors are looking to Ultra HD TVs and other technologies such as quantum dot to tackle the high-end segment in 2015, and many analysts believe OLED is a lost cause for the time being due to high end-user pricing for the technology as a result of high material costs and low production yields.
However, LG is sticking to its belief that OLED panel technology will remain superior to LCD technology due to eveness in illumination as a result of no backlighting module required as well as its ability to curve and produce thin, light panels. Production costs are expected to come down in 1-2 years significantly and yields will increase.
Due to such trends the market observers believe that OLED TVs will start proving more competitive in the TV industry as early as 2016 but more likely in 2017. By the time the technology becomes more affordable in the market, LG hopes to have secure footing in the segment, outdoing other potential competitors such as Samsung.
Meanwhile, the high-end TV market is starting to show momentum and Ultra HD TV shipments are expected to reach around 30 million in 2015, putting the penetration rate for the technology at around 10%. Ultra HD content is still an issue and may not be widely available for another 1-2 years.
